You can’t make a good homebrew without a good recipe. Here are my two favorite books for solid recipes to make and adapt:

Brewing Classic Styles

Brewing Classic Styles by Jamil Zainasheff and John Palmer is one of the best  books that you can buy.  Some of the categories in this book are outdated because the BJCP style guidelines have changed several times since the book’s publication.  I have used this book to make award winning beers by both following the recipes as written and by slightly tweaking.

Modern Homebrew Recipes

Modern Homebrew Recipes by Gordon Strong is another great resource for trying out new recipes for both classic styles and more recently developed styles.  I have also used this book to help me medal at homebrewing competitions.
